YUMI is a very lightweight application that is available for free. It helps create the already mentioned bootable disks and features options for disk cloning, antivirus tools and diagnostic tools. The difference between this application and similar ones is that it does support uninstallation and installation of many distributions.
YUMI extracts distributions with the use of syslinux. If needed, it can boot many ISO files with the use of grub. The application was created to run various “LIVE Linux” OS. Basically, it was created to help you run the operating system directly from the USB drive, not the hard disk.
You do not need to install anything when you want to use YUMI. You just have to save it on the media you are to use. After saving, the application can be used on as many computers as you want, all just from an USB disk.
To create the bootable USB drive, you need to follow these steps:
- Select the drive you will use as a USB device
- Select the Linux distribution
- Select the relevant ISO file
YUMI offers a pretty long list of possible Linux distributions to use. This includes Linux Mint, OpenSUSE Live, Fedora, and Debian Live, just to mention a few. You can also choose to remove or view the installed distribution. As expected, formatting the USB drive is also possible. When you choose all you want, just click “Create” and the process starts.
Besides the applications you can add, you can use extra utilities, like Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, HP SmartStart, System Rescue CD, an antivirus program, and even installers for some Windows operating systems.
When files that are needed for the bootable disk are not locally available, YUMI can download them.
